I am so excited. The City of Brea, California has been a client of mine since 2000. This is the third redesign of their site. We've incorporated a lot of social media elements, reorganized the navigation and site logic and freshened up the entire look by completely tossing out the old!
We all enjoyed the old look, but it was really time for a change.
Included in the redesign as a new template for their calendar to carry through the new colors. They also use the Granicus system for their meeting agendas and minutes. This also needed to be updated.
The site is easy for city staff to manage. They are able to customize inside features and links for each department. They have new policies in place for social media so that the Police, Theater, Recreation and other departments can have unique links to their own Twitter and Facebook pages.
The subsection navigation is in the left column for each landing page. Not only do they have dynamic drop-down navigation, but with the simple sub-section display in the left they make it even easier for visitors to find the information they want quickly.
This round, we really cleaned up the clutter that happens when you keep adding to an existing design. Every department wanted their area featured and the result was clutter and confusion. After 3 years of the same design, this new cleaner look solved a lot of the frustration being felt by some site visitors.
Headlines will become a bit more descriptive since they cannot rely on the abstract below to capture the visitor's interest.
Here is the old look to show a before and after:
